memorial day mass

The major events of the year are the open air Memorial Day Masses which are a longstanding tradition at each of the cemeteries. Every year, approximately 800 people attend the 10 a.m. Mass under a tent in St. Joseph's Field of the Sacred Heart. Monsignor William Helmick of nearby St. Theresa of Avila Church in West Roxbury is the celebrant.

At Holyhood, over 100 people gather for a 9 a.m. Mass celebrated by Father Jack Ahern, former Pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption parish in Brookline. Families of those buried at the cemeteries, many of whom were veterans, and those who live nearby or who have moved away often return each year for the ceremonies.
